Today we remember the legendary Lester Flatt, born this day in 1914. His contributions while performing with Bill Monroe and then Earl Scruggs & The Foggy Mountain Boys left a rich bluegrass music legacy.

Appropriately, Lester was a member of the inaugural class of Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame inductees in 1991, along with Monroe and Scruggs.

His brilliant lead vocals, rhythm guitar playing, and MC work are on display in this clip from the Flatt & Scruggs TV Show.

Happy birthday to the late David “Stringbean” Akeman, who entertained the country with his old-fashioned banjo picking and comedy on both the Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw, as well as alongside Bill Monroe.

Enjoy Stringbean's performance of "Hillbilly Fever" on the TV show he was most well-known for.
